- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2012Don't know if this was the original cover since there were two with the same recording, but the music I highly recommend. The recording quality on the original was good, not great, since it was quite early in EJ's career, but it is some of the deepest EJ/BT music you'll find.
Rather than argue about whether to buy it, here are some actionable recommendations that will guide you:
- If you enjoyed the album, "Elton John," or "Tumbleweed Connection," or "Madman Across The Water," you're likely to enjoy this one. My favorite part is the last track, where the sound engineer creates a collage of all the songs on the album to tie it all together as a single work of art, and generously surprises us with a terrific jazz jam by the band, in the track.
- If you're a pop-40 fan from the 1970's, than stick with "Honky Chatteu," "Don't Shoot Me," and "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road." If you like esoterric stuff, you can go for "Rock Of The Westies," ignoring the track "Island Girl," or the wierd but fun album, "Carabou" with a great track, "Dixie Lilly" with pretend French-like words among some interesting other stuff.
However, with the exception of singles "Blessed," "Believe," "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word," the deep "Song For Guy" (on the otherwise worthless album "A Single Man"), plus Lion King contributions, I find other songs lacking.
- If you like singles such as "Little Jeanie" and "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" I have no recommendations for you because sad songs DO NOT say so much. In my view, Elton is just riding the wave of his success with these songs, and they would never have made air play if he was an unknown.
Still, I find a great deal of EJ's catalog as impressive as any pop/rock band. He's cearly in the same R&R camp as the Beatles, Who, Doors, Stones, Moody Blues, Marvin, Elvis, et. al. and we should all be thankful for the joy he has brought us.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2022I've been an Elton John fan for quite sometime thanks to my mom. She always listened more to his mainstream music. I finally decided to dig deeper and listen to his earliest works, which are quite amazing. Sure, this isn't his greatest album but it showcases his talents and I was very impressed. I saw some of these reviews stating that this album was terrible but nahhh. Western Ford Gateway is a great song and better than some of his mainstream hits in my personal opinion. True Elton fans will appreciate this album because we the thing we love most about him is how his style changes time and time again. This is what he was and now we see what he has become!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2012I really like this album. I was pretty disappointed to find out that not alot of people, especially in the U.S.,didnt really pay attention to this album. Too bad, because this is basically the album that showed how much potential EJ had at the time. ANd he certainly grew. I hope more people can find out about this album. My faves are "Empty Sky", "Valhala", "Western Ford Gateway", "Sails"[which i love cuz it has that old rock n roll feel],& "Its Me That You Need". Love em all. Hope yall do too.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2018This album is NOT for the casual fan. But if you are like me and already have all the classic Elton John albums from the 1970's and want to dive deeper, this first album is full of quality material. A bit raw perhaps, but bursting with youthful energy and lots of talent. Keep in mind this album has a 1960's sound, not the refined 1970's sound of his later hits.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2006If you're an EJ die hard (like me!) U WILL appreciate this true 1st effort from the debut of EJ & BT! We jam with the 8 minute version of the title track/mellow out with Valhala("In your own time"), then "Western Ford Gateway". Next, Hymn 2000(way cool!)
Side 2: Lady what's Tomorrow(early Nigel)/Sails(cool EJ!)Scaffold
(I sang this in Choir MY way for my music teacher & crew!)the
beautiful Skyline Pidgeon & concluded with Gulliver's Gone/Hay Chewed(a rockin' Instro) & the Reprise(way neato, man!)A VERY
energetic debut from 1 of the GREATEST song writing teams in this U.S.S.A! Period!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2020Its definitely not his best album, I'm just keeping it to have it. Its cool to see where he has come from.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2022Nice sound
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2015An early Elton John album with a fantastic song called "Empty Sky". The other songs on the album are typical Elton tunes and are fine but "Empty Sky" is a masterpiece that deserves a listen. I love to crank it up as loud as possible and let Elton rock my room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Young Elton at his finest!
I love EJ and he is the reason I play piano and sing so I am a bit biased. Bought the lp version in London when it first came out and carried it in my suitcase for 2 1/2 months! Anyway, I hadn't heard this in years and it was just as great as I mentioned. What a talent and what a vision! The songs are beautiful but no real "hits" jump out. Just a fantastic voice, great piano and amazing string arrangements which prove he and Bernie were ahead of their time. I read somewhere this was originally done on 4 track recorder but with the re-mastering you would never know. Not for the person who just dabbles in Elton's music but for a fan it is a must-have!
