RESILIENT HOME / HIGH-END HOMESTEAD ...
Main Garden Beds

There is no such thing as a resilient home without the means for growing substantial amounts of food. This property features 8,500 sqft of garden beds—enough to provide ample food for the family table, and with enough spare capacity to supply a market gardening operation. Almost all of the garden beds are framed 'raised beds,' with five or more years organic soil amendment.

Main Beds, west

These are two different angles on the series of raised beds that is the heart of the main gardening area. They are shown mulched, but they each have five years of organic soil amendment under their belts. The left photo shows the attractive path winding its way from the deck, past the shed and greenhouse, out to the main garden area. The sitting area is a nice place to contemplate the beauty of the space.

Main Beds, east

Two 50' x 4' asparagus beds assure a large yearly harvest. (This is the growth phase of the asparagus—the spears come in the spring.) Two additional garden beds complete the large complex of raised beds in the main garden area.

Pea Trellis

At the end of the path is a large raised bed/trellis that can be fitted with shade cloth to extend the spring growing season for cool-weather crops like peas and lettuces. On the left, a summer crop of sunflowers is past its prime but will be left as a food source for winter birds.

Main Beds, south

This large bed near the east end of the house is convenient for supplying oft-used kitchen crops. The inner framed bed in the foreground hosts a small new strawberry bed with a few alternate varieties. The second inner bed has a small patch of asparagus.

Main Strawberry Bed

This large strawberry bed is planted with Tri-Star strawberries. These are heavy bearers, offering large sweet berries from May until November. Three of the rows are currently planted with Tri-Stars; the other two are prepped for future expansion of the strawberries, and in the meantime have hosted potatoes and onions.
