RESILIENT HOME / HIGH-END HOMESTEAD ...
Safety, Security, and Multimedia

The reason we think about issues related to resilience is because we think the future might pose new challenges—on top of those we already have to deal with already. In that vein, this home offers a full suite of wiring and systems for security and entertainment.

Alarm System

The house has a standard alarm system that features window, door, motion, fire, and glass-break sensors.

Camera System

The camera system has 11 different views of the grounds around the house. Camera types are a combination of "light concentrating" and infrared for nighttime observation. The camera grid can be viewed on any TV in the house—it's just a button press away.

Severe Weather/Other

A 4-foot crawlspace serves as severe-weather safe area and includes phone, lights, and electricity. Additional security features .... shhhh!

Stereo

Most folks (including me) usually do not define "nice livingroom" as loaded up with stereo equipment. Thus, the office (third bedroom) is wired so it can drive multiple additional areas with "whole house" stereo:

  • livingroom
  • garage
  • deck

In the office, the built-in storage areas in the Murphy bed unit for CDs and records complete the setup. Also, a shielded cable system runs from the desk area to the stereo area to facilitates streaming internet audio throughout the house.

Ethernet

I don't like leaving the wireless modem on all the time because of the radiation exposure. So, a central ethernet nexus can drive ethernet drops in three additional rooms ...

  • office (third bedroom)
  • master bedroom
  • dining room (because, well, you just never know)

Phone

Phone drops are practically everywhere, for ease of use and aesthetics of phone locations:

  • livingroom (2)
  • kitchen (1)
  • master bedroom (2)
  • guest bedroom (2)
  • office (1)
  • garage (1)
  • shed (1)
  • crawlspace (1)

Satellite TV

Wiring was installed to allow a satellite feed to supply TV to most rooms in the house. The locations for the satellite boxes also have phone outlets, so their program-guide updates are free. (Currently, though, I've cancelled the satellite service—Netflix is plenty enough entertainment for the limited amount of time I have for watching the tube.)
