RESILIENT HOME / HIGH-END HOMESTEAD
...
Solar Composting Toilet
A dual-chamber solar composting toilet is attached
to the east end of the shed. This was originally intended as a demonstration
project to show people that a composting toilet does not have to be 'yucky'—and
indeed this beautifully tiled room is not. The south-facing trombe wall
provides extra heat to the pile to keep all the microscopic composting
bugs happy, and with proper management, I've never had to worry about
a 'latrine smell' here. There are two concrete chambers—at any given
time, one is in use, one is 'cooking'—whose large size reduces the
time between cleanouts. Perhaps most importantly, from a resilience perspective,
this facility offers the means to recapture important nutrients, should
that become more than just an eco-driven fancy.
