Solar Hot Water
The hot water system has an 80-gallon tank with
twin thermal collectors on the roof. The heat-transfer loop is freeze-protected
for year-round operation. The transfer pump is powered by a circuit protected
by the UPS/battery system in the event of a power outage. The system is
so efficient that with optimized hot-water usage, I can usually leave
the heating element completely off from May through October. A timer system
helps optimize use of the backup element during cooler periods.
