YOU CAN’T SPELL “PLANET” WITHOUT “PLANT”
...or How Lawnmowers May Not Be the Best Thing for Lawn Care
|
Mother Nature is indeed very forgiving, but flowers are always an appreciated touch. As are trees and bushes and ferns! In general, more plants means a happier environment.
Grasses that need mowing are one exception. Pollution from mowers and runoff from lawn chemicals are big environmental problems. One solution is to convert more of your lawn to low-maintenance greenery that doesn't mean mowing. When undertaking such a task, it's important to focus on species that are native to the climate where you live. These plants are likely to be well suited to the available rainfall and normal temperatures in your area, and they'll be your best bet for hardy growth and low maintenance.
Water is more and more becoming a resource in short supply. Converting some our lawn-centric suburban acreage to more sustainable types of groundcover will help conserve water. It can also result in a beautiful, low-maintenance yard---the kind of yard that neighbors and visitors gush over and ask how they can do it too.
So the next time you're cursing the lawnmower because it won't start or rethinking the monthly application of chemicals by that slightly mutated guy from the Green Glowing Grass lawn Service, you might consider trading in your lawn on a better model.

This garden universe vibrates complete...
Between the eyes and ears there lie
The sounds of color and the light of a sigh.
And to hear the sun, what a thing to believe,
But it's all around if we could but perceive.

Can these lyrics be referring to the effect your new backyard garden may have on you? Well, that's up to you and your garden tools. In the meantime, consider the album these lyrics come from: "In Search of the Lost Chord." It's about seeking things both physical and metaphysical, outside ourselves and within ourselves. It's at once cosmic and earthbound. So slip behind the wheel of your existence, fasten your headphones, and let the search begin...
