FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
General FAQsIs all the material original? The writing for the joke/humor pages and the environmental pieces is all original, except as noted on the pages themselves. The reviews for albums, movies, and books are also original and are copyright protected. Book and movie info that is not prefaced by the word "review" is usually just the publishing company's press blurb; we do not claim any copyright for such passages. Can I use the material in my web site or in a project? Sometimes. We do allow re-publication under certain circumstances, especially for articles. For info on article reprints, please see our reprints page. For information about using cartoons, please contact us. Do you purchase or accept humor material or environmental articles written by others? We do not accept humor material at this time. We do occasionally adapt or re-publish others' articles. For more information, please contact us.
Jokes/Cartoons and TerraBitsWhere can I see a list of all of the pages with jokes/cartoons/humor? Go to the list of jokes-cartoons of Grinning Planet. Are the people you quote in the TerraBits real people? No! We hope no one is as "out-there" as the people we "quote" in our TerraBits. We do, however, try to come up with semi-plausible names that are funny in the context of the day's jokes. Are all the cities you use in the TerraBits real? Yes. If you don't believe us, check out MapQuest!
Environmental/Health ArticlesWhere can I see a list of all articles? See the list of all articles (Eco-Logicals) ever published. Where can I get more information about environmental issues? See our environmental resources page.
Songs, Movies, Books (Better Planet Items) / Album Reviews (CDs)Where can I see a list of the Better Planet items? Go to the index pages for the various categories of Better Planet items: Have you read, watched or listened to all the "Better Planet" items? Many of them, but not all of them. We try to make it easy to tell the difference by adding a tag before the review text that says "Review" or "Description." If the tag says "Review," then we've read/watched/listened to the item; if it says "Description" or says neither, we haven't. Descriptions for books are often just the publisher's description. We only write album reviews for CDs we have heard and liked. Does Grinning Planet make money on "Better Planet" items? If you click on one of the Amazon.com links in a Better Planet item box and buy the item within that Amazon browsing session, we may get a small commission, depending on whether you buy it new, used, or from a Z-shop. If you buy the item during a later browsing session, we get nothing but the satisfaction that you'll likely enjoy a good book, CD, or movie. We use any proceeds from Better Planet items to help cover the costs of running the Grinning Planet web site and mailing list.
Google AdSenseWhy do I occasionally see inappropriate ads? Google analyzes the content on each page of the Grinning Planet site and tries to custom-select ads for that page. This is an automated process—there is no little gnome sitting in a cubicle deciding which AdSense ads to use. The Grinning Planet team does, however, keep an eye on which ads come up and tries to block any ads it feels are inappropriate for the site. If you have seen an ad you think is inappropriate for Grinning Planet pages, please contact us and we'll consider trying to block it in the future. Be sure to include a description of the ad—AND THE URL IT POINTS TO. Do you make money from the ads? If someone clicks on an AdSense ad, Grinning Planet gets a commission from Google. We use any money generated from AdSense ads to help cover the cost of the Grinning Planet operation.
Mailing ListThe graphics aren't displaying in the HTML email. The graphics in the Grinning Planet HTML emails are stored on the Grinning Planet web site. When you open the email, your web program downloads the cartoon images and photos from the web site. This function is usually transparent to you. Many email programs and services think they're helping you by turning off all external grahpics in your emails by default. This has some minor security advantages but destroys the quality of most HTML email. The services and programs that do this also provide options for you to turn the graphics back on, either for your current message or for all future messages.
If you can't find where to do this in your email program, check out our version-recommendations page for tips. I signed up—where are the emails? This is such an important topic, we have a whole page devoted to it. I did not sign up for Grinning Planet emails, so why are you sending them to me? The Grinning Planet email list is a double-opt-in list, which means that to become subscribed, you had to have replied to a confirmation email before your name was added to our list. It's possible you signed up and then forgot that you did it. (It DOES happen, at least to the doddering old fools on the Grinning Planet team.) If you are signed up and want to unsubscribe, go to the unsubscribe page. Another possibility is that someone has been forwarding the Grinning Planet emails to you. You can tell the difference by carefully examining the "From" address of the messages you're getting. If you are receiving forwarded Grinning Planet emails and want it to stop, you will need to contact the person who is doing the forwarding. If you've looked at these possibilities and are still feeling angry and lost in the Great Big Cyberworld, contact us and we'll try to help you get the emails to stop. How do I unsubscribe? You can unsubscribe by going to www.grinningplanet.com/unsub I tried to unsubscribe but could not. Why not? The first possibility is that you entered your email address incorrectly. The format to use is youraccount@yourprovider.com . If you're sure you are entering the address correctly and the unsubscribe page tells you it can't unsubscribe you, then... Why do I have to confirm my subscription via email? It's possible for a person to submit any email address on the sign-up page. The confirmation email is our way of ensuring that it was really you that requested the subscription. You MUST reply to the confirmation email for the sign-up process to be complete. Can I change my subscription to a different email address? At this time, the only way to change your subscription to another email address is to unsubscribe the current address and then sign up for a new subscription for the new email address. Please do both! If you need help, contact us. What if I go on vacation? There is currently no "subscription suspension" option. The best thing to do is to make sure you've cleared out your mailbox as well as possible before you go so it doesn't overflow in your absence. The Grinning Planet emails will be waiting for you there when you return! Please do some relaxing for us—we need it. Should I put the Grinning Planet mailing list address in my address book? Yes, if it will help ensure that the messages arrive consistently in your inbox. These days, that's usually the case. The address to add (or otherwise whitelist) is — for text-only, "list@grinningplanet.com"; for HTML email, "list-h@grinningplanet.com". Our recommendations page has tips on how to do this for selected email programs. Will the Grinning Planet emails work with my spam filter or anti-spam program? They should. If you use an anti-spam filtering program—especially a challenge-response program—we highly recommend that you "whitelist" the Grinning Planet email address. The address to add (or otherwise whitelist) is — for text-only, "list@grinningplanet.com"; for HTML email, "list-h@grinningplanet.com". We usually do not have time to respond to challenge-response systems—it is up to you to ensure that Grinning Planet is whitelisted. Many internet services now have some built-in filtering tools that you can use to avoid spam. If you use these tools, you may need to tweak them to make sure you get your Grinning Planet emails. Can I forward Grinning Planet emails to friends? It's great if you want to occasionally forward the Grinning Planet emails to a friend, co-worker, or highly intelligent pet to make them aware of our cool material. However, rather than forwarding the messages on a regular basis, please get them to sign up for their own copy. This will help us more accurately manage our subscription database and, more importantly, help us avoid the occasional forwardee who might end up thinking we're spamming them. (Spam, spam, spam, spam.... Bloody Vikings!) We especially ask that you not forward Grinning Planet emails using an auto-forward rule or auto-responder. Thanks much. Does Grinning Planet share subscribers' addresses with spammers or email marketing companies? No. Never. Please see our privacy policy for more info. Do you sell the information I provide when I sign up for the free email service? Never! Please see our privacy policy for additional info. Who do I contact if I have problems?
