Album Review: Hey, I always thought he was saying "checks for free"! Well, my loserness should not detract from the greatness of this song and this album, which includes a wealth of immortal Straits' songs. "Money for Nothing" was the quirky song that propelled Dire Straits into rock stardom, but they had been making great music for year by now, so the global recognition was overdue. Brothers in Arms continues the excellence of their efforts. "So Far Away" is a lilting, laid-back song that includes one of those great, trademark-Knopfler guitar hooks. "Why Worry" is delicate and warm without being cloying. "Walk of Life," another hit from the album, is upbeat and bouncy, with the most memorable organ riff since "96 Tears." All of the remaining songs are quite satisfying as well. Although the songwriting here is less breathtaking that that on "Making Movies" and less progressive than that on "Love Over Gold," Straits manages to find a very nice balance of catchy vs. thoughtful on Brothers in Arms.
