“The Trees” – Rush, from the album Hemispheres |
|
|
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas....
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

Review: "Hemispheres" was the bridge between Rush's early career of hard-edged progressive rock and their middle period of more accessible prog, which produced hits like "Freewill," "Tom Sawyer" and "Subdivisions." With this album, Rush merged thoughtful lyrics, blistering guitar, and progressive underpinnings to create some amazing rock montages, including the short but inventive "Trees." There are about a half-dozen essential Rush albums, and this is one of them.
