SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS PLANNED FOR FUTURE SPACE SHUTTLE MISSIONS: |
|
|
|
Determine whether M&M's held outside the Earth's protective atmosphere will melt in your hand, not your mouth |
|
|
Study the effect of zero-gravity on the mating effectiveness of two Velcro straps |
|
|
Determine whether a dog lost in space can still somehow find his way home |
|

|
Homer J. Simpson
(one-time cartoon astronaut)
"If I was the astronaut doing the testing, I would want to work on something important, like a system to allow donuts to be properly dunked in a zero-gravity environment."
Other than using the space shuttle to send all our toxins 8 miles high into the junkosphere, is there any way to realistically achieve a zero-emissions environment here on earth?

“Space Truckin'” – Deep Purple, from the album Machine Head |
|
|
We had a lot of luck on Venus;
We always had a ball on Mars,
Meeting all the groovy people.
We've rocked the Milky Way so far,
We danced around with Borealice—
We're space truckin' round the stars...
Come on, let's go... Space Truckin'!
Remember when we did the moon shot,
And Pony Trekker led the way?
We'd move to the Canaveral moon-stop,
And every 'naut would dance and sway.
We got music in our solar system;
We're space truckin' 'round the stars.
Come on, let's go... Space Truckin'

Album Review: Deep Purple is one of the few bands that has managed to successfully combine progressive rock with a heavy dose of metal. In this case, there's a healthy helping of spaciness and blues rock too. It all combines to give us one of Deep Purple's best albums,
and certainly one of their most accessible works. There were two humongous hits on the album: "Highway Star" was one; the other was "Smoke on the Water," an anthem that perfectly captures the feel and sound of the heavy progressive scene in the early 1970s.
The remaining songs are all just as memorable in their own right, not so much for their lyrics, which don't exactly break any ground in the deep-thinking department, but for their energetic, fat sound, and the album's superb production values. If you were to ever
get the chance to actually go "Space Truckin'," this is one of the albums you'd want along for the ride.

Hollywood Science: Movies, Science, and the End of the World
How much faith we can put into Hollywood's depiction of scientists and their work in films like A Beautiful Mind? How accurately do films like Metropolis, The Matrix, War of the Worlds, and An Inconvenient Truth capture scientific fact, theory, and disaster scenarios? To what extent do these films influence public opinion about science and the future?
