Album Review: The Psychedelic Furs were one of the quintessential 1980s bands, and whether you call their music "modern rock" or "new wave" or any of the other labels applied to that period, this band put out some mighty fine tunes. The Furs were at their best when they piled on the gloss, as evidenced here by top tracks like "Heaven" and "Love My Way," both of which will drive you to foot tapping and head nodding with their slick musical
charm. A third song in this category, "The Ghost in You" is the pinnacle of the album, adding an impossibly beautiful melody to an already-pretty arrangement. Edgier material works well for the Psychedelic Furs too, and here that is best represented in songs like "Pretty in Pink," "Heartbreak Beat" and "President Gas," each of which combines
coarseness and gloss to excellent effect. (And yes, "Pretty in Pink" was the title track to the movie of the same name.) "Sister Europe" changes things up by offering a throbbing beat overlaid with rough-sounding guitar and shimmering synths. This CD collects all of the Psychedelic Furs hits and fills things out with a bunch of their good non-hit songs. This is one case where wrapping yourself in Furs can be a good thing!
