When they say "illustrated," they mean it! Every part of this 500+ page tome is packed with beautiful photos and color illustrations of plants to help you decide what will look nice—and grow well—in your garden. Many detailed how-to illustrations are combined with step-by-step instructions that will help you get
it right the first time when it comes to trying new plants and techniques.
Large numbers of tables are included that compare species to help you pick the right variety for every garden niche. Both Latin and common plant names are used.
One minor complaint is the advice to "close the furrow with your feet but avoid treading too firmly." At Grinning Planet Farm, we think using feet at all risks too much soil compression. Hand tamping allows you to pack the soil in "just enough."

Overall, though, we are really impressed with this book. It's the gardener's equivalent of the Physicians Desk Reference—a resource guide that thoroughly covers everything from lawns to flowers, shrubs, and trees to fruits and vegetables to pest control. We think you'll find yourself referencing this book often.

Trevor Cole is widely considered one of Canada's top gardening experts. He studied horticulture at the Royal Botanical Gardens in the UK and was curator of the Dominion Arboretum in Ottawa for over 20 years. Cole is the author of many magazine articles on gardening as well as many books.
Fern Marshall Bradley is the former gardening-books editor for Rodale Press. She is best-known for the best-selling
Rodale's Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening and has also authored or edited many books, including
Reader's Digest's Vegetable Gardening.
