ALBUM REVIEW The song "Rain on the Scarecrow" is a direct commentary on agricultural policies that have led to the serious downturn in family farming in the US. It's hard to hear the lyrics and not feel empathy for the plight of small farmers. Other insightful songs on the album—such as "Small Town" and "You've Got To Stand For Somethin'"—continue with themes of rural affection or rebellious attitudes. But in addition to inspired message music, Mellencamp also knows how to write great hit songs, as evidenced here by "Lonely Ol' Night," "Rumbleseat," and "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." Most consider this to be his finest album. |
