Album Review: Phil Manzanera was a pillar of talent as the guitarist in both Roxy Music and 801, but he released a number of great solo albums too, and K Scope is one of them. For fans of 801's classic album Listen Now, there's good news here—at least three tracks from K-Scope could have easily fit into the superb musical framework of Listen Now: the loopy instrumental title track, "K-Scope"; the entrancing, mind-blowing "Walking Through Heaven's Door"; and another great instrumental, "You Are Here," which will give you that excellent "Falling Feeling" all over again. But K-Scope is not just a Listen Now wannabe. Manzanera moves into new territory on the rest of the songs, finding a sound that is one part Roxy Music, one part 801, and two parts something entirely different. Top tracks include the upbeat "Cuban Crisis," with its sultry atmosphere and semi-reggae rhythm; the funky, hyper-cool sounds of "Hot Spot"; the laid-back smoothness of the math-gone-melodic song "Numbers" (featuring John Wetton on vocals); and the lilting, free-floating "Gone Flying," with its understated but awesome drum work (not to mention the excellent vocals from Neil Finn). K-Scope is a smorgasbord of tasty tunes that aptly showcase Manzanera's versatility and talent—one of the essential Manzanera albums.
