YOU'LL HAVE TO TAKE A QUIZ IF YOU WANT TO SIT AT THE ENERGY BAR
Munch on a Handful of Energy Quizzes, Smarty Pants!

Where on earth does our energy come from? Why does it take so much energy to get off the couch? OK, that's probably in the category of Unknowable Metaphysics or TV-Related Disorders, but there are lots of interesting facts about energy.

The basics of our daily energy usage seem obvious enough—we put gas in the car or truck, and we use electricity in picture of off-shore wind turbine our homes and workplaces. Where do these types of energy come from? What are the effects of using them? Will technology eventually catch up with Star Trek and fulfill the promise of power from dilithium crystals?

OK, seriously, there are some important questions regarding energy, and you may already know some of the answers! So how about taking an energy quiz ... or several? Below we list a gigazap of energy quizzes that are available on the web, with ratings and comments to help you decide which energy quiz(zes) suit your interests. Some of the energy quizzes are at kids' sites, but some of the questions are likely to be challenging for adults as well. But don't worry—no matter how many of these energy quizzes you take, no one has to sign your report card or give you a lecture about how you'll have to do better in the future.

A few final notes about our list of energy quizzes:

  • The quizzes are listed in the order of overall quality (in our opinion), though all of them are worth your time (otherwise we wouldn't have listed them!).
  • The difficulty rating for each quiz is out of a possible 10, with 10 being the hardest.
  • Each quiz will open in a new window when you click on the title.
  • Good luck, you future energy quizzard!

EcoKids - Energy Quiz

  • Difficulty Level:  6  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: Flash
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: No
  • Overall Rating: A
  • Comments: This quiz on energy is designed for kids but still has a few tough questions. Very nice design and user interface, with additional info/explanations right after the answer click-thru. Our only complaint is that it could have been longer!

British Science Museum - Energy Quiz

  • Difficulty Level:  7  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: HTML
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: Yes
  • Overall Rating: A
  • Comments: A bit Brit, but a very nicely done energy quiz, with informative pop-ups and some fun things for you to get sidetracked by.

EnergyStar - Lighting Quiz

  • Difficulty Level:  7  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: HTML
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: Yes
  • Overall Rating: A-
  • Comments: This quiz thoroughly covers energy issues as they relate to lighting, with good explanations after each question.

BBC - Renewable Energy Quiz

  • Difficulty Level:  9  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: HTML
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: Yes
  • Overall Rating: B+
  • Comments: This quiz on renewable energy is tough but has interesting questions. Answers and brief explanations are provided at the end.

LearnAboutEnergy.org - Energy Whiz Quiz (secondary level)

  • Difficulty Level:  2  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: HTML
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: Yes
  • Overall Rating: B
  • Comments: An interesting quiz format—clues instead of questions. Definitely for "energy quiz beginners."

US Department of Energy - Energy Kids Page Quiz

  • Difficulty Level:  4  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: HTML
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: No
  • Overall Rating: C+
  • Comments: This quiz is OK in terms of content, but it has a bit of a clunky interface. (Clicking on the answers takes the user to a page that only tells you whether you were right or wrong, but offers no additional information. To get that, you need to click on the "find the answer" link for the question.)

Activities for ESL Students - Energy Quiz

  • Difficulty Level:  6  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: Flash
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: Yes
  • Overall Rating: C+
  • Comments: A decent little energy quiz, but no additional information is provided for right or wrong answers, some of the answers (choices) were truncated in the display, and the "correct" notification was almost too fast to see!

Quiz Tree - Renewable Energy Sources and the Environment

  • Difficulty Level:  5  (10 is hardest)
  • Format: Flash
  • Automatic Scorekeeping: Yes
  • Overall Rating: C
  • Comments: Not a bad quiz on renewable energy topics, but there's no additional information provided for right or wrong answers. Also, picking a consistent the chime scheme for "right answers" and "wrong answers" would have been a better idea than the random sounds.

Americans buy ten thousand gallons of gasoline per second, without giving much thought to where it all comes from.
