The Latest Oil Glut—Once Bitten, Twice Shy — It comes as little surprise that the author of a book entitled Snake Oil: How Fracking's False Promise of Plenty Imperils Our Future is a critic of the natural gas industry and a proponent of peak oil theory. Host Alex Wise reviews the issues with Richard Heinberg of the Post Carbon Institute and gets his perspective on how plunging oil prices will affect the energy and transportation industries; the status of the North American natural gas boom; how the turbulence may alter consumer behavior in the near term; and the need for sound policy to guide us through the long-term challenge of living in a post-carbon world.

GP comment:  Heinberg is solid as usual, though if you have heard his other interviews in the last six months, you will not find much new here.

Twilight's Reach — KMO and John Michael Greer talk about the two novels Greer published last year. The first is Twilight's Last Gleaming, a geo-political thriller where a declining United States and a resurgent China come to the brink of all-out nuclear war. The other novel is Star's Reach: A Novel of the Deindustrial Future, which is set in a world shaped by the exhaustion of fossil fuels, where new social forms have replaced our familiar institutions and where new ways of inhabiting the North American continent have been necessitated by centuries of climate change.

GP comment:  I haven't read the books, but it's always interesting to get glimpses of possible future scenarios.

A "Renewable World" Built on Fossil Fuels is Not a Renewable World — The message for green-energy lovers and haters alike is simple: We can't keep this crazy civilization running just on the sun and wind, let alone on high doses of fossil fuels. When we stop being able to milk the billion year-pile of concentrated solar energy in the form of oil, gas, and coal, something WILL change. Energy expert David Fridley of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and the Post Carbon Institute talks about the energy dilemma, diving deep into the specifics. Topics/points include ... Our energy matrix cannot be renewable until the renewable-energy technologies and sources can replicate themselves. Wind turbines, solar panels, and electric cars are all hobbled by the limitations of fossil fuel inputs for their creation and maintenance as well as by the specialized minerals needed for their creation. He acknowledges the psychology of the American energy consumer as a key problem, referencing former Energy Department Secretary James Schlesinger's axiom that the American people only have two modes: complacency or panic.

GP comment:  This is one of the best reviews I've ever heard of the problems we face as demand for energy keeps rising but technology finds itself unable to compensate for the peak in global net energy. Must-listening!

Energy Crossroads: A Burning Need to Change Course
(2007) (Documentary)

DESCRIPTION: America consumes 25% of the world's energy, 85% of which comes from non-renewable fossil fuels. Whether from a climate-change or peak-oil perspective, our energy consumption is a problem. Energy Crossroads examines the situation and offers concrete solutions for those who want to educate themselves. The film features passionate individuals, entrepreneurs, experts and scientists at the forefront of their fields, bringing legitimacy and expertise to the film's core message.

Fuel (2008) (Documentary)

DESCRIPTION: High oil prices, global warming, and an insatiable demand for energy—these issues will be the catalyst for heated debates and positive change for many years to come. Fuel exposes the shocking connections between the auto industry, the oil industry, and the government, while exploring alternative energies such as solar, wind, electricity and non-food-based biofuels. The film covers the pros and cons of biofuels, how America's addiction to oil is destroying the US economy, and how green energy can save us—but only if we act now.

book cover for Crude World, by Peter Maass, 8/10/2010

The Violent Twilight of Oil

Peter Maass examines the social, political, and environmental impact of petroleum on the countries that produce it. Every unhappy oil-producing nation is unhappy in its own way, but all are touched by the "resource curse"—the power of oil to exacerbate existing problems and create new ones. From Saudi Arabia to Equatorial Guinea, from Venezuela to Iraq, the stories of rebels, royalty, middlemen, environmentalists, indigenous activists, and CEOs come together in this account of the consequences of our addiction to oil.

book cover for Uranium, by Tom Zoellner, 3/5/2009

War, Energy, and the Rock That Shaped the World

Marie Curie gave us hope that uranium would be a miracle panacea, but the Manhattan Project gave us reason to believe that civilization would end with apocalypse. Fortunes have been made from this yellow dirt; massive energy grids have been run from it. Fear of it panicked the American people into supporting a questionable war with Iraq and its specter threatens to create another conflict in Iran. Now, some are hoping it can help avoid a global warming catastrophe.

book cover for Renewable Energy Made Easy, by David Craddock, 8/18/2008

Renewable Energy Made Easy will provide you with everything you need to know about alternative energy sources like solar, wind, wave and tide, ethanol and other biofuels, geothermal, and hydrogen. The author considers the availability, cost, aesthetics, and environmental considerations for each of these technologies—all in jargon-free and easy-to-understand language.

. . . about Energy, Fossil Fuels, Alternative Energy, Renewable Energy

"We are witnessing the beginning of one of the great tragedies of history. The United States, in a misguided effort to reduce its oil insecurity by converting grain into fuel for cars, is generating global food insecurity on a scale never seen before."

Lester Brown, author of Plan B 4.:  Mobilizing to Save Civilization

"When plants die, they're recycled into basic elements [by the biota in the soil] and become a part of new plants. It's a closed cycle. There is no bio-waste."

Alice Friedemann, from the article, Peak Soil: Why Cellulosic Ethanol, Biofuels Are Unsustainable and a Threat to America

"First, there is the power of the Wind, constantly exerted over the globe.... Here is an almost incalculable power at our disposal, yet how trifling the use we make of it! It only serves to turn a few mills, blow a few vessels across the ocean, and a few trivial ends besides. What a poor compliment do we pay to our indefatigable and energetic servant!"

Henry David Thoreau, from Paradise (To Be) Regained [1843]

"The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the sun."

Ralph Nader
