OIL AS RELIGION ...
Petrotheism and Dominion

In this funny video about oil as a religion, Mark Fiore returns to the petrotheism theme to explore how the US public worships oil and how certain politicians (and some others) justify ravaging the earth for more of the black gold. (Of course, we the addicted are really to blame, not the idiot leaders who tell us what we want to hear.)

THE REAL THIRD RAIL OF CLIMATE CHANGE
The two stereotypical sides of the climate debate are (a) climate change is a potential planet-killer and MUST be addressed; and (b) climate change is nothing to worry about, it's all part of a natural cycle. Guy McPherson reviews the scientific evidence that there is a third scenario: Climate change has already entered a runaway-feedback mode and there is now nothing humans can do to reverse the catastrophic level of warming that's coming—and coming soon. The good news? McPherson delivers his dark news clearly, with a great sense of humor, and with excellent insights into the human condition.  Watch climate feedback loop video(1:51:49)

THE NATURAL EFFECT
In this brilliant satire of the highly abused food term "natural," we see a spokesman for the "False Advertising Industry" proudly explain the clever ways they trick consumers into thinking "natural foods" always come from Old MacDonald's farm, when often they come directly from the dark heart of the industrial food system.  Watch funny natural foods video(4:25)

GOODBYE NET NEUTRALITY, HELLO GILDED-AGE INTERNET
With a court ruling now saying internet service providers no longer have to treat as equal all content going through their pipes, the big ISPs like Verizon and Comcast are rubbing their hands together at the thought of charging content providers more money for premium delivery speeds---and slowing down or blocking those who won't pay. Mark Fiore keeps his sense of humor as he animates the threat to our beloved "system of tubes."  Watch funny net neutrality video(1:38)

Energy Slaves — Where past societies shackled human muscle with force and subjugation to create an energy surplus, beginning in the late 19th century we began using coal, then oil, then natural gas to create an unprecedented energy abundance. As the era of surplus energy comes to an end, how will our everyday reliance on energy slaves for mechanical and cognitive work change and adapt? Andrew Nikiforuk, author of The Energy of Slaves: Oil and the New Servitude, discusses ways of understanding our use and abuse of cheap energy. ~~ Also in this show, Chris Nelder talks about an energy-transition tipping point, clean energy in Germany, and the decline of the big oil players.

GP comment:  The concept of "energy slaves" is essential. The combination of technology and cheap energy has freed us from most of the drudgery associated with past centuries. If the per capita level of available energy begins to fall—as it inevitably will on a finite planet with an expanding population—the average number of energy slaves each of us commands will also begin to fall.

Electric Utilities Fight Home Solar and Net Metering — Utility companies want to scale back a key incentive for homeowners to install solar panels—net metering, a policy that allows homeowners to sell or bank their excess solar power on sunny days. Bryan Miller of the Alliance for Clean Energy details utilities' attempts to reduce or do away with net metering.

GP comment:  As with all corporate enterprises, energy companies will fight anything that detracts from their bottom line, regardless of whether it supports the long-term goals of society. The corporate shark relentlessly swims and eats, swims and eats. But I insult the actual shark with such an association.

Peak Oil—Past, Present, and Future — Richard Heinberg and Mike Ruppert, two veterans of the effort to alert the public to the problem of peak oil, review the last decade from that perspective. Were the peak oil prophets right? Will peak oil mean collapse, or burning the last, worst dirty fuels, or merely transitioning to alternative energies? Who have been the most influential players in the peak oil movement?
