How Cyprus and United States Compare in Financial Gamesmanship —
03 Apr 2013 —
Andrew Gause explains why the arrangements in Cyprus and the US are quite similar—both countries have been living beyond their means by relying on the their banking system to extract money from other parts of the world. Of course, unlike the US, Cyprus does not control its own currency and the game has been taken away from them. Additional topics include.... how the financial elite are acquiring the assets of sovereign countries, taking Gordon Gekko's "greed is good" to a whole new level; the hazards of being a shareholder in Dollar Inc.; backwardation in precious metals reflects high physical demand; what's going on with Bitcoin speculation.

Public Opinion About Drones Has Changed Significantly Since Rand Paul Filibuster —
29 Mar 2013 —
In early March, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul used a 13-hour filibuster to draw attention to the Obama Administration's drone programs. Rand's action eventually forced a statement from the White House that they do not see any scenario in which a US citizen could be drone-killed on US soil. Slate's David Weigel observes that public opinion about drones has changed significantly since that filibuster.

A Conversation on Guns in the US —
03 Apr 2013—
Dan Baum, a self-described tax-and-spend Democrat and gun lover, discusses the themes in his new book, Gun Guys—A Road Trip. Dan begins with this observation: Over the last two decades, as gun restrictions have loosened and the number of privately owned fire arms in the US has doubled, gun violence has fallen by half. While he doesn't buy into the simplistic narrative of the pro-gun right that greater gun ownership equals a safer society, he doesn't condone the alarming and bigoted anti-gun rhetoric of the left either. Dan challenges fellow gun guys to be good stewards of the gun ownership process, and he challenges fellow liberals to take control of their addiction to self-righteousness and stop issuing blanket insults and condemnations of gun owners.

02 Apr 2013 —

Kevin Carson on "Objective" Journalism —
03 Apr 2013 —
Kevin Carson of c4ss.org offers some thoughts on the problem of journalists being "objective." Instead of simply reporting the two sides of the argument, journalists have a duty to report the truth, even if that makes one side out to be a liar (or if, more likely, the truth means the issue requires a complete reframing that will make both sides out to be liars).

Ruppert on Converging Crises —
31 Mar 2013 —
Michael Ruppert discusses the many signs of converging crises across the planet, both manmade and planet-driven. Beyond dead pigs, now dead black swans are appearing in China's waterways, adding an ironic twist to the carnage there. In the UK, there were several thousand deaths from the unprecedented cold this winter. The "Monsanto protection act" is the final evidence of Obama's complicity in the dark machinations of TPTB. The shenanigans in Cyprus, where banksters are stealing depositors' money in broad daylight, plus the explanatory announcements by EU central bankers about how such policies may be applied broadly in the future, should tell us that money in any bank is at risk by definition.

Arnie Gundersen: What Did They Know, and When Did They Know It? —

Gundersen argues that the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident in Japan really began in 1965, inside the US, with General Electric and the engineers who designed the site plan and architecture for the Mark I reactors. He also points the finger at the US Atomic Energy Commission that permitted a flawed design to be licensed and built in the US and elsewhere. Finally, he explains why TEPCO clearly knew more during the accident than they told the press and public.
