Dan Carlin's Common Sense
The Emasculated Rulers —
06 May 2013—
Dan Carlin explains why "we the people," the supposed ultimate rulers in our democratic republic, are not at all in charge. In fact, even the people who are supposedly in charge of the United States are too fearful of "consequences" to tell us the truth about how they are running things for us, the people who elected them. In a sidebar, Carlin also comments on how the elimination of the draft has allowed most Americans to complacently nod their heads when politicians talk about needing to send troops to faraway lands to address supposed threats.

Some say the military's culture and judicial process are a big part of the problem.

Your Body is a Corporate Test Tube —
30 Apr 2013 —
Gerald Markowitz explains that increasingly we are each a toxic waste site, full of the chemicals and toxics used in pesticides, industrial processes, and consumer products. Many impacts to human health are already well understood, but good long-term studies are often not done—or have their results buried by corporations with a vested interest in continuing to sell toxic products. Markowitz begins with lead pollution, the coverup of evidence of its health effects, and the ultimate removal of lead from products and gasoline. But then he moves through a litany of similar situations with industrial chemicals that leave us all looking like human guinea pigs.

Though the film weaves together themes from previous well known sci-fi movies, runs half a parsec too long, and fails to provide any predictions or warnings about where mankind might be headed, Kim thinks Cruise's megastar-level effort and the film's exceptional production values make it worthwhile.
