GP comment: Pesticide drift may sound like a boring technical topic, of limited interest to anyone but farmers. But it affects a wide variety of issues, from air quality for residences around non-organic farms to the integrity of organic foods.

Green Groups Sue EPA Over Agent Orange-Related Herbicide —
A coalition of environmental groups and farmers is suing the EPA over approval of Dow Chemical’s new GMO crop herbicide, Enlist Duo, a combination of glyphosate and 2,4-D, one of two active ingredients in the notorious Vietnam-era defoliant Agent Orange. The lawsuit alleges inadequate environmental and health assessments by the agency. Bill Freese of the Center for Food Safety discusses the suit and the effects the herbicide is likely to have on weed resistance and pollinators.

GP comment: This case has gotten a lot of press, but the entire pesticide regime is out of control, as a walk down the pesticide aisle in the gardening section of a big-box store will tell you.

Poisoning the Sky—A Community Investigates Chemtrails and Fights Back —
Residents of Shasta County, California have documented that the lingering white trails in the sky above—chemtrails—are correlated with an increase in toxic contaminants in rain, snow, and surface water, including aluminum, barium and strontium. In this clip, we hear experts and citizens present their evidence before the Shasta County Supervisors as a matter of public health and an issue of citizens' right to know. They point out that the chemicals in the contaminated water are also found in patents for weather modification chemicals used by the military and private contractors.

Chemical Reaction, A (2009) (Documentary)
DESCRIPTION: Dr. June Irwin, a dermatologist, noticed a connection between her patients' health conditions and their exposure to chemical pesticides. With relentless persistence she brought her concerns to town meetings to warn her fellow citizens that the chemicals they were putting on their lawns posed severe health and environmental risks. Dr. Irwin's persuasive arguments and data eventually led the town to enact a by-law that banned the use of all chemical pesticides. The pesticide manufacturers and their lawyers, of course, did not site idly by and just let it happen....

Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)
Starring: William Shatner, Tiffany Bolling
REVIEW: The premise of Kingdom of the Spiders is that pesticides, in particular DDT, have killed off so much of the local tarantulas' normal food sources that the creepy crawlies have been forced to move up the food chain, taking on cattle, dogs, and even humans. There is a lot of truth to the idea that chemical pesticides disrupt the natural balance of things, but this is not a movie about scientific fact. It's about hairy-scary spiders and a small town's fight to survive—a typical 1970s bugs-attacking-things movie. We have to admit, though—the last scene yields a surprisingly good payoff.

Sense of Wonder, A (2009) (Documentary)
DESCRIPTION: When pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962, the backlash from her critics thrust her into the center of a political maelstrom. Despite her private persona, her convictions about the risks posed by chemical pesticides forced her into the role of controversial public figure. A Sense of Wonder is an intimate and poignant portrait of Rachel Carson's life as she emerges as America's most successful advocate for the natural world. (55 min)

"Until we have a more complete understanding of pesticide toxicity, the benefit of the doubt should be awarded to protecting the environment, the worker, and the consumer—this precautionary approach is necessary because the data on risk to human health from exposure to pesticides are incomplete."
— British Medical Association
"If ... we have concluded that we are being asked to take senseless and frightening risks, then we should no longer accept the counsel of those who tell us that we must fill our world with poisonous chemicals; we should look about and see what other course is open to us."
— Rachel Carson, author, Silent Spring
"Exposure to some pesticides during infancy, even at very low levels, can lead to serious life-long consequences if the pesticides disrupt hormone-driven developmental processes."
— Charles M. Benbrook
"Each Valentine's day, when US and other consumers purchase millions of flowers for their loved ones and deeply inhale the fresh aroma of roses and carnations, they rarely think about where the flowers come from or how they are produced. Yet, if these same people knew more about the high levels of agrochemicals used in flower production and the often less-than-rosy labor conditions under which flowers are produced, they might think twice about sinking their noses into the petals to smell the perfume."
